Utah Outside – Featuring Index Pants – July 23, 2010/

Rock climbing pants have undergone many evolutionary changes over the decades. From durable cotton pants in the ’60s and ’70s, to the god-awful neon spandex of the ’80s and ’90s, to pretty much “anything goes” these days including shorts, jeans, khakis, capris and pants built specifically for rock climbing, like the Outdoor Research Index Pants.

Like most outdoor clothing, the Outdoor Research Index Pants are made from a breathable, wicking material that keeps sweat and moisture away from the skin to keep legs cool, dry and comfortable. It’s a double-weave of nylon, polyester and spandex fabric that is stretchy, which is great for making those big moves on the cliff. A DWR finish keeps things dry on the inside by keeping moisture on the outside.

Splitterchoss.com – Outdoor Research Climbing Clothing Review – July 9, 2010/

If you grew up in the Northeast, or the Northwest, you probably had a pair of those Outdoor Research gaiters when you first got into backpacking. They were crucial for keeping your feet dry on the often muddy and wet trails you’d encounter, and maybe you also picked up one of those Seattle Sombrero’s, the nice wide brimmed rain hats to keep your noggin dry. And just maybe, that’s where your experience with OR stopped, and in your mind they were forever relegated to being the kinda-dorky-hiking-gear company.

Well, apparently I haven’t been paying close attention, because these guys are now putting out clothing for everything from rock climbing to mixed climbing. I had a chance to check out some of their climbing oriented pieces this spring, and I was impressed, to say the least.

4alloutdoors.org – Featuring OR’s Women’s Solitaire Capri Pants – June 22, 2010/

The Outdoor Research Solitaire Capri Pants are stylish and nice looking pants. They are not some overly baggy or frumpy hiking pant. The pants have a medium rise and taper nicely through the thighs. They are made of a soft, brushed, quick-drying, lightweight Supplex nylon that has UPF 30+ protection and a DWR finish to shed light moisture.

The Solitaire Capri Pants have a good fit through my hips and thighs. The pants are not roomy by any means. They just fit comfortable and not snug. The Solitaires have a double snap /zipper fly closure and five wide belt loops. They cover my calves entirely as they rest about 5 inches above my ankle.
