Currently, Chad is attempting to set a new speed record for an ascent of Mount Everest from basecamp and back, without the use of oxygen. It appears as though the current speed record for Mount Everest is 18:20, set by Lakpa Gelu Sherpa on May 26, 2003 (10:56:46 to the top) and Chad hopes to break that record any day now.

To attempt something this epic requires an incredible amount of will, drive and focus. Climbing enthusiasts have been following the preparations for this feat in an extensive series called Chad Kellogg: The Everest Quest on Outdoor Research’s VertiCulture website. The Seattle-based company is the manufacturer of functional solutions for human powered adventure and Kellogg’s sponsor, which documented his steep step-by-step progress in real time on their website over the weekend.

Word as of yesterday is Kellogg has returned to the base camp. Outdoor Research will update this information as well as details on Chad’s ascent as soon as they can. Hopefully we will be hearing of a great victory for this adventurous soul.
