Chad Kellogg, the 38-year-old Seattle-based climber attempting to break the speed ascent record on Mount Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen, stopped by Expedition Hanesbrands’ site at Base Camp last evening to check in on the progress of his buddies Jamie Clarke and Scott Simper. Clarke and Simper summited this morning at 8:40 a.m. (check out climbwithus.com), but Kellogg’s summit window–May 23rd–is still a week out.

Chad Kellogg: The Everest Quest May 2010/

Outdoor Research, manufacturer of functional solutions for human powered adventure, is documenting in real time an ultimate human powered adventure: Chad Kellogg’s speed attempt of the 29,029-foot Mt. Everest without oxygen. Kellogg is planning to begin his summit attempt at 4:30 am Nepal Time (UTC+5:45) on Saturday, May 22.

Outdoor Research has sponsored the 38-year-old American climber on this expedition. Climbing enthusiasts have been following the preparations for this feat in an extensive series called Chad Kellogg: The Everest Quest on Outdoor Research’s VertiCulture website.

Outdoorzy – Chad Kellogg Attempts Everest Speed Record – April 1, 2010/

This week Chad Kellogg left for his attempt to summit Everest at record speed. According to Outside Kellogg will try this without oxygen, sherpas, or a partner…. all alone. Chad’s goal is to make the summit in 30-something hours. Outdoor Research is sponsoring a broadcast of the trip through audio broadcasts on The Everest Quest. Fitz Cahall of The Dirtbag Diaries is producing this, so it should be good.

Since Kellogg’s wife died in a climbing accident in Alaska he has embraced challenges such as this. “Now is all you have. You have to make the most of it.” he says.
