His goal: set a new speed record ascent of colossal, 29,029-foot Mt. Everest without the aid of oxygen or Sherpas.

Climbing enthusiasts have been following the preparations for this feat in an extensive series called Chad Kellogg: The Everest Quest on Outdoor Research’s VertiCulture website. The Seattle-based company is the manufacturer of functional solutions for human powered adventure and Kellogg’s sponsor, which documented his steep step-by-step progress in real time on their website over the weekend.
